Year_2016 Graduation Exhibition

Sanhoseom is a graduation project at Kyung Hee University's Housing & Interior Design program. The project aims to empower communities through human interaction and was inspired by the idea of repurposing abandoned community spaces.
The project site is Eoulrim-roe, Mapogu, Seoul, Korea, in the Hongdae area. Hongdae area, short for Hongik University, used to be a cultural hub for artists, musicians, and fans, but gentrification has caused many cultural venues and artists to leave the area.

Sanhoseom focuses on bringing diversity and liveliness back to the Hongdae area by repurposing an under-maintained park in the centre of the neighborhood. The park is located on the vertical axis of the area, surrounded by retail shops, small restaurants, and parked cars. At night, the park becomes a trashcan and smoking area, and pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads. To revitalize the area and restore its identity as a hub for culture, arts, and diversity, the key question being addressed by Sanhoseom is "What is the key identity of the area?"
The concept is inspired by the idea of a coral reef and island. The park is imagined as an island in the middle of the neighborhood, and just as saving the coral can bring marine life back, the goal of Sanhoseom is to bring life back to Hongdae through space. The building exterior is designed with unique, fun shapes inspired by coral, and the logo was designed with reference to the shape of the building's facade and roof.
